Installation Advice

Important: These are general guidelines. Always consult with a professional tile installer for specific project requirements and adhere to local building codes. Ensure the subfloor is structurally sound, clean, level, and dry before commencing installation.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Jaipur Limestone Tiles
  • Suitable tile adhesive (check manufacturer's recommendations for natural stone)
  • Grout (suitable for natural stone, consider a sealant additive)
  • Tile spacers (various sizes depending on desired grout joint width)
  • Tile cutter or wet saw
  • Notched trowel (size recommended by adhesive manufacturer)
  • Rubber grout float
  • Grouting sponge and buckets of clean water
  • Soft cloths
  • Sealer for natural stone (impregnating sealer recommended)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Spirit level
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Preparation:

  1. Subfloor Preparation: Ensure the subfloor (concrete, wood, etc.) is clean, dry, level, and free from dust, grease, or any loose debris. For uneven subfloors, use a suitable leveling compound.
  2. Layout Planning: Plan your tile layout to minimize cuts and ensure a balanced appearance. Consider the direction of any veining in the tiles. Dry-lay a few tiles to visualize the pattern and spacing.
  3. Marking Guidelines: Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark reference lines on the subfloor to help keep your tiles straight and aligned.

Installation:

  1. Applying Adhesive: Using the notched trowel held at a 45-degree angle, spread a consistent layer of tile adhesive onto a manageable area of the subfloor (work in small sections as the adhesive has an open time). The depth of the adhesive should match the recommendations of the adhesive manufacturer.
  2. Laying Tiles: Carefully place the Jaipur Limestone tiles onto the adhesive with a slight twisting motion to ensure good contact. Use tile spacers to maintain consistent grout joint widths.
  3. Checking Level: Regularly check the level of the tiles with a spirit level and make adjustments as needed while the adhesive is still wet.
  4. Cutting Tiles: When necessary, use a tile cutter or wet saw to cut tiles to fit around edges and obstacles. Always wear safety glasses when cutting tiles.
  5. Allow Adhesive to Cure: Allow the adhesive to cure completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before proceeding with grouting (typically 24-48 hours). Avoid walking on the tiles during this time.

Grouting:

  1. Mixing Grout: Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Consider adding a sealant additive for enhanced protection against stains and moisture.
  2. Applying Grout: Using a rubber grout float held at a 45-degree angle, spread the grout over the tiled surface, forcing it into the grout joints. Work in sections.
  3. Removing Excess Grout: Once the grout has slightly firmed up (follow the grout manufacturer's instructions), use a damp (not wet) sponge to wipe away excess grout diagonally across the tiles. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water.
  4. Final Cleaning: After the initial cleaning, use a clean, damp sponge to perform a final wipe of the tiles, removing any remaining grout haze. Buff the tiles with a soft, dry cloth.
  5. Allow Grout to Cure: Allow the grout to cure completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Sealing:

  1. Ensure Tiles and Grout are Dry: Make sure the tiles and grout are completely dry before applying a sealer (typically a few days after grouting).
  2. Apply Sealer: Apply an impregnating sealer specifically designed for natural stone according to the manufacturer's instructions. This will help protect the limestone from stains and moisture penetration. Apply evenly with a clean cloth or applicator.
  3. Allow Sealer to Cure: Allow the sealer to cure completely before exposing the tiles to water or heavy traffic.

Maintenance:

  • Regularly sweep or vacuum the tiles to remove loose dirt and debris.
  • Wipe spills immediately with a clean, damp cloth.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Re-seal the tiles periodically as needed, depending on the level of traffic and exposure to moisture.

Remember to always consult with a professional if you are unsure about any aspect of the installation process. Enjoy the natural beauty of your Jaipur Limestone tiles from Doga Stone!

Mineral, Calcite veins are an expected variation of the Jaipur Limestone Tiles

Colour Variations of Jaipur Limestone Tiles
jaipur---umbrian-limestone-tiles-63.jpg

Jaipur Limestone tiles are a natural stone, and as such, they exhibit inherent variations that contribute to their unique charm and character. Here's what you can typically expect in terms of natural variations:

  • Colour Variation: One of the most noticeable variations is in colour. Jaipur Limestone typically features warm tones, ranging from creamy beige and sandy hues to subtle shades of grey, olive, and even hints of brown or copper. You can expect different tiles within the same batch to have slightly different base colours and undertones. Some tiles might lean more towards a consistent beige, while others might display more prominent grey or olive tones.
  • Veining: Limestone is a sedimentary rock, and its formation process often results in the presence of veins running through the stone. These veins can vary in colour (often lighter or darker than the base colour), thickness, and direction. Some tiles might have minimal veining, appearing relatively uniform, while others can display more prominent and intricate vein patterns.
  • Fossils and Shell Fragments: Being a sedimentary rock formed from the accumulation of organic materials, Jaipur Limestone can contain small fossils or shell fragments. These might appear as subtle inclusions or markings within the stone, adding to its natural history and unique appearance. The presence and distribution of fossils can vary significantly between tiles.
  • Texture: While the finish applied (honed, brushed, tumbled, etc.) will dictate the overall surface texture, there can still be minor natural variations in the stone's texture. Some areas might be slightly smoother or more riven (naturally split) than others, contributing to the tactile appeal of the tiles.
  • Markings and Inclusions: You might find other natural markings, such as small spots, blemishes, or mineral deposits, which are all part of the stone's natural formation. These are not considered defects but rather features that enhance the individuality of each tile.
  • Edge Variation (Especially with Tumbled Finishes): If you opt for tumbled Jaipur Limestone tiles, you should expect significant variation in the edges. The tumbling process intentionally creates a worn, aged appearance with irregular and chipped edges. Each tile will have a unique edge profile. Please note that the calibration means for the riven surface flagstones is -/+ 2mm.
  • Shade Variation Between Batches: It's important to note that even when ordering Jaipur Limestone tiles at different times, there can be shade variations between different production batches. This is inherent to natural stone quarrying and processing. It's always recommended to order the total quantity needed for your project at once to minimise this risk and to blend tiles from different boxes during installation to achieve a harmonious look.

In summary, expect Jaipur Limestone tiles to exhibit a moderate to high degree of natural variation in colour, veining, texture, and the presence of subtle markings and fossils. This variation is a key part of their natural beauty and is what makes each installation unique. When laying the tiles, it's best practice to blend tiles from different boxes to ensure a balanced and aesthetically pleasing distribution of these natural variations across the entire surface.
