Installation Advice
Please note: All the installation advice below is for guidance purposes only. DOGA Stone AND ITS AFFILIATES ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CLAIMS AS A RESULT OF THE INSTALLATION SUGGESTIONS. YOU MUST USE A PROFESSIONAL INSTALLER AND PREMIUM SETTING MATERIALS.
Installation Advice for Dijon Limestone Floor Tiles
Substrate Preparation:
- Ensure the subfloor (substrate) is structurally sound, level, clean, and free of dust, dirt, oil, and any substances that could interfere with adhesion.
- Moisture Check:Test the moisture content of the subfloor. Excessive moisture can cause issues with the adhesive and the tiles.
- New Screed: If installing on a new screed, ensure it is fully cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Priming:Use an appropriate primer to improve adhesion. Kerakoll Primer A is recommended for mineral, cement, or gypsum-based substrates. For wood, bitumen/asphalt, and existing tiles, Kerakoll Keragrip is suggested.
Acclimatization: Allow the Dijon limestone tiles to acclimatize to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 24-48 hours before installation. This helps to prevent expansion or contraction issues after fitting.
Dry Laying: Before applying adhesive, dry lay the tiles to:
- Determine the optimal grout joint width (a minimum of 3mm is generally recommended). For opus patterns, the grout width will vary.
- Plan the layout to avoid narrow cuts and achieve a balanced appearance. Start tiling from the center of the room.
- Blend the natural tonal variations of the tiles to achieve the desired aesthetic.
- Determine the optimal grout joint width (a minimum of 3mm is generally recommended). For opus patterns, the grout width will vary.
Underfloor Heating:
- If you have underfloor heating, ensure it is fully commissioned (hydraulic pressure test and thermal conditioning cycle run after the screed has cured) before tiling.
- Install anti-fracture matting between the subfloor and the tiles to accommodate movement caused by temperature changes and prevent cracking.
Adhesive: Use a high-quality adhesive suitable for natural stone. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for mixing and application.
Cutting:
- Electric wet cutters with a high-quality diamond blade are best for cutting limestone.
- Ensure the diamond blade is appropriate for natural stone to prevent chipping.
- Consider using a professional with experience in cutting natural stone for the cleanest cuts.
Grouting:
- Use a grout suitable for natural stone.
- Ensure the grout joints are completely filled.
Sealing (Pre and Post Grouting):
- Limestone is porous and requires sealing to protect it from stains and moisture.
- Apply a sealer before grouting to help prevent grout haze and staining during the grouting process.
- Apply a second coat of a suitable impregnating sealer after the grout has fully cured. Consider a matte finish sealer like Lithofin Stain Stop, which won't darken the stone.
- Limestone is porous and requires sealing to protect it from stains and moisture.
Cleaning During Installation: Clean any residue from the finishing process or tiling as you go using a dry brush or damp sponge. For the post-grout final clean, a diluted pH-neutral cleaner like Lithofin Power Clean (1:30 ratio) can be used, followed by rinsing and towel drying.
Maintenance Advice for Dijon Limestone Floor Tiles
Regular Cleaning:
- Sweep or vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris. Do this when the dirt is dry to avoid spreading.
- Occasional mopping with a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone (e.g., Lithofin Wash & Clean diluted in warm water). Use as little water as possible and ensure the floor dries quickly. Avoid excessive mopping.
Sealing: Re-seal the tiles every 4-5 years for internal areas with moderate moisture. Bathrooms or high-moisture areas may require more frequent sealing. To test if resealing is needed, drop a little water on the surface; if it soaks in rather than beads, it's time to reseal.
Spot Cleaning: Wipe up spills immediately, especially acidic substances like wine, coffee, citrus juices, and harsh chemicals, to prevent staining and etching. Use a cloth and warm water for immediate cleaning.
Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners (including bleach and many common household cleaners), or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the sealant and the stone itself.
No Steam Cleaners: Avoid using steam cleaners as they can damage the sealant and potentially the stone.
Be Prepared for Stains: Keep a bottle of a specialized natural stone stain remover (like Lithofin Power Clean or OIL-EX for oil-based stains) on hand for stubborn marks. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.
Cleaning Advice for Dijon Limestone Floor Tiles
Everyday Cleaning: Use a dry Swiffer-type mop or a soft brush vacuum attachment to remove loose dirt and dust daily or as needed.
Routine Mopping: Mop occasionally with a pH-neutral stone cleaner diluted in warm water. Ensure your mop is wrung out well to avoid leaving excess water. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth and allow to air dry or use a clean, dry towel.
Deep Cleaning: For a more thorough clean, use a slightly stronger dilution of a pH-neutral stone cleaner (follow product instructions). Apply, let it dwell for a few minutes (keeping the surface wet), scrub gently with a soft brush or mop, and then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.
Removing Specific Stains:
- Acidic Stains: Flush the area immediately with water. If a mark remains, use a specialized limestone stain remover, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Oil-Based Stains: Try flushing with water immediately. For stubborn stains, a specialized oil remover for natural stone may be necessary. You might need to create a poultice in very severe cases.
- Grout Haze: Use a grout haze remover specifically designed for natural stone, following the product instructions carefully.
Maintaining Grout: Clean grout lines with a grout brush and a pH-neutral cleaner or a specialized grout cleaner safe for natural stone.
By following these installation, maintenance, and cleaning tips, you can ensure that your Dijon limestone floor tiles retain their natural beauty and durability for years to come. Remember to always test any cleaning or sealing products in an inconspicuous area first.
Good to know
Dijon Limestone is a natural stone, and its inherent beauty lies in its natural variations. Here's what you can typically expect:
Colour Variations
- Base Tones:The primary colour palette ranges from soft beiges and creams to light, warm greys. You'll see subtle shifts and blends of these neutral tones within individual tiles and across the batch.
- Honey Tones:Some tiles may exhibit warmer, pastel honey or slightly mustardy hues, adding depth and character.
- Subtle Shifts:Expect gentle transitions between slightly darker and lighter shades, contributing to a natural and non-uniform appearance.
Markings and Features
- Fossils:One of the defining characteristics of Dijon Limestone is the presence of small, perfectly preserved fossils scattered throughout the stone. These can vary in size, shape, and frequency, making each tile unique.
- Calcite Veining: You might observe delicate veins or threads of crystallised calcite running through the tiles. These can appear as subtle white or slightly darker lines, adding intricate patterns.
- Pitting and Sediment Flecks:Natural pitting (small holes or indentations) and flecks of sediment are common. These features contribute to the stone's rustic and organic feel.
- Oxidisation: Some tiles, particularly in lower grades like "Dijon Blend," might show slight hints of oxidisation, which can appear as warmer, slightly rusty tones.
Texture Variations
- Surface Finish Dependent: The degree of textural variation will depend on the finish of your tiles (e.g., tumbled, honed, brushed, seasoned). Tumbled finishes will have more variation with softer edges and a slightly uneven surface, while honed finishes will be smoother with less surface texture.
- Natural Pitting: Even in smoother finishes, some natural pitting can create subtle textural differences across the surface.
Overall Appearance
- Uniqueness: Due to these natural variations, no two Dijon Limestone tiles will be exactly alike. This is a key part of the stone's charm and contributes to a one-of-a-kind floor.
- Blending: During installation, it's recommended to lay out tiles from different boxes and blend them to ensure a harmonious distribution of colours and markings across the floor. This prevents patches of similar-looking tiles and enhances the natural aesthetic.
- "Champagne" Selection vs. "Dijon Blend":Be aware that different grades of Dijon Limestone exist. Premium selections often have lighter and more consistent tones, while "Dijon Blend" typically features more pronounced colour variation and natural characteristics. By embracing these natural variations, you'll achieve a floor that is rich in character, timeless in appearance, and uniquely yours.
